Hi,
I live in the top floor of a residence building and there is water leaking through my kitchen ceiling fan. What can be done to fix this issue and what are the safety hazards of this condition?

Are you a residential tennent, with a lease or do you rent? If so, contact your lease or building management. There is more than 20 inches of snow melting today and its raining.

Hi, I rent, and I called my landlord but the answer he gave me was to wait and see if it happens again which has me worried sick because I don't know what next steps to take.

First don't turn the fan or light on when its wet, but I am sure you know that.
If it is warming up outside it could be water from the roof or it could be that the ceiling fan penetration in the ceiling is allowing moist air from your kitchen into the attic space where it freezes on the underside of the roof/framing and when it gets warmer it melts and leaks back down where it came from.
Either way your landlord should want to check it out because water inside like that will cause damage eventually. You should be cautious with with water and electricity but I have seen similar situations with water coming through light fixtures and surprisingly haven't seen any short out yet but it is very possible.

The first that that "has to be done" is find out where the water is coming from, then someone has to figure out how to repair it. We cannot do either from here based on the information you have given us.

Thank you for your status as a renter. You have done your job of informing the owner of the dangerous situation. The owner, now knows something is wrong. Having renter's insurance, will protect your personal belongings while the owner does their inspection and corrects the issue. If the issues is not resolved, you always have the option to move elsewhere. I would give the owner some time as the snow melts.

melting snow causing water to run through a light fixture is 'acceptable'?
imo: at the very least: the fixture should be disconnected until problem is fixed
if the water causes a 'short' and starts a fire will your ho insurance protect your life?
