 Leaky tub spout
Author: ting45 (IL)

My parents have an old Kohler single handle tub spout that had a leak. A plumber came to fix it, but we soon noticed that it started to leak again. To try to save my parents some money by hiring another plumber, I thought I'd try to fix it. I did a little research and began disassembling. I removed the handle and escutcheon plate. Then, I mistakenly gave the stem (?) a few turns instead of the nut that I didn't see at first b/c it was recessed. I bought a socket wrench to loosen the nut, but it wasn't gripping anything. I looked closer, and it looked more like a washer than a nut. I didn't want to continue for fear that I made matters worse. I put the parts back into place, turned on the main water, and the spout was spewing out water at medium-low pressure while it was off. (Ugh.) I'm afraid I wrangled something behind the wall... Here's a picture of what I was looking at:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Ting

repairs to that particular style valve are done by removing the 4 screws and pulling the whole loosened assembly towards you.

Have you established that it is really Kohler, or just going by the guess we made in an earlier posting?

Then it must have been on another site where he was looking for the manufacturer. Given that it rotated clockwise cold to hot, that implied that it was a Kohler, or similar.
