I got to thinking today about the new touch faucet technology and the solenoid valve that is at the heart of the system. Is this a fail-safe device so that when the valve goes bad, it will close the water off until the problem is addressed?

It would seem most logical to design the valve so that the dc from the battery would be needed to open the valve, and any failure of the battery, solenoid or switching apparati would render the valve unable to open. However, I imagine like any other faucet a piece of rust or debris caught in the valve seat, or wear of the valve surfaces could continue to cause the drippy little leaks we have become accustomed to.

it fails closed, power is used to open it. however leaks can happen just like humidifier solenoids.

The faucet is designed to default OFF. The technology was a very popular in the commercial markets for a decade before it was introduced for residential use.

Are just a few of the many companies investing in this technology for consumer use in the kitchen and bathroom. Those with DisAbilities and Seniors in their Golden Years are benefiting from this technology.

I have one of those in my kitchen (Delta)...when the battery dies it doesn't work
they are smart enough not to design it to stay on when the battery dies
the cat has accidentally turned it on...it has a timer and shuts itself off after 5 or 10 minutes

Good to hear about it having an integral timer. I was visualizing a catastrophic event occurring where the solenoid valve failed, there was a 'runaway' faucet and the stopper was left in the sink.

That would happen if the cat turned the faucet on and it ran for 10 minutes before turning off, or if the spout was not over the sink when it was turned on.
