I have spent $455 on my toilet since I had a new seal put last Aug. I can't do this! Please help. 5 months after the seal was put in I noticed a reddish brown ooze coming from under the caulking..all around the base. A new seal was installed. Then the plumber put in a new connection because he felt water there.(?).But the toilet now leaks from the back rear corner. IHe said I need a new toilet, it most likely has a crack somewhere. I wanted a second opinion. Got a new seal (the plumber thought the other had come unstuck because no shims were installed and should have been,) That stopped the leak for three days, now it is leaking again in the same place...when the toilet is flushed. Can anyone help??

IF toilet leaks ONLY around the base, and ONLY after it is flushed, there's a problem with the flange/seal. Is the toilet steady? After the shims were installed can you rock the bowl in any direction? Is the floor and sub-floor sturdy?

Check that it's not leaking from the tank to bowl seals, flashlight and toilet
Paper might help with locating source of leak

Not without seeing the toilet and the installation. You COULD have a defective toilet, but the only way to tell that is take it up and inspect it. You could be having problems with the sealing ring, depending on how you install it and if the piping was done properly.

Thanks for your reply. This is a toilet installed about 1960. I have lived with it for 17 years. Never a problem. I know the floor is not 100% even but the shims take care of the that. The toilet is set solid. I have noticed over the weekend that sometimes it doesn't leak when flushed now. I tuck kleenex or paper towels around the base at the back corner and sometimes they have not had a drop.and then the next time they are soaked.

check to see that the 'refill tube' is squirting into the overflow tube in the tank
evidently the temperature in the bathroom may have changed
possibilities:
tank to bowl leak
refill tube 'squirting'
fill valve connection or angle stop leak
cracked bowl (unlikely)
bad seal at flange (back of flange should be level with finished floor)
a 'failing/poor' seal may become evident if a partial stoppage occurs resulting in 'back pressure'
best of luck

I hope you realize that a plumber would NOT be able to definitively repair the leak, unless he can make it happen while he is there.
