 WATER HAMMER FROM HELL! HELP
Author: kyfish10 (PA)

Hi everyone,

I'll try and be as detailed as possible. Any help would be immensely appreciated. this is driving me nuts.

House - 3 story split level town home where I own the larger unit - 2nd and 3rd floors. 2.5 baths with 2 on the 3rd floor and water heater on the 3rd floor in a closet. the house was built in 2011 and the piping is PVC from what i can tell.

the 0.5 bath is on the 2nd floor - my main floor.

any time the master bathroom (3rd floor) runs water - sink, toilet or shower - piping above the 0.5 bath downstairs knocks every 4-5 seconds repeatedly BOTH while the water is running and for 10 minutes after it stops. IT IS EXTREMELY LOUD! this bathroom is immediately below the upstairs. i originally thought it was just the shower but it's not - it's any time water is run now and SEEMS to be both cold and hot.

a water hammer arrestor was placed on the piping around the washer/dryer which is also on the 3rd floor but that didnt do anything.

what appears to work is when the master shower is running i turn on the 2nd full bath shower and airs seems to escape stopping the noise. it makes a high pitched squeak for 15 seconds and then stops.

what's odd is that the sound starts while water is running and continues the entire time after it's shut off. so i dont know if its a true hammer or loose piping/valve.

please help. i called a plumber who thought it was the pressure valve in the delta shower which i will be replacing soon but after testing this some more i dont think that is it.

thanks,
kyle

juuuust a guess, but no harm will be done if you try :

remove the expansion (compression) tank from your water heater TEMPORARILLY

if 'noise' stops, VOILA (now replace it with a new one)

if not

???

thanks for the response. would that cause issues at one spot in the house only though?

? maybe ? air leaking from a bladder may tend to rise

if this problem is recent go ahead and try my suggestion

im not sure i fully understand the proposed solution. take the expansion tank off the water heater tank and run the water/toilet/shower?

thanks again.

From your posting, there is NOTHING there to help us diagnose the problem without being there. It is NOT "water hammer" since that would ONLY occur when the faucet was turned off, or in some situations when it is turned on, but NEVER while the water is running.
