 Shower plumbing question
Author: Mdriedl (IL)

Question:
I'm putting in a large shower with four fixtures.
Shower head 2.5gpm
rain head 2.5gpm
2 body sprays 2gpm/spray

My plumber says we need 3/4" line to the second floor where the shower is. Ok. But he wants to install a 1/2" delta high flow valve and 1/2" diverted valve after getting 3/4" copper to the valve. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the 3/4" copper or is this a pressure issue?

Also, he wants to use the old method of stand piping the hot and cold to eliminate hammering. Should I insist on the newer method of air hammers in the system?

If you need "hammer arrestors", which is really not likely, the air chambers are only effective for a few months, and when they do fill with water, it will be almost, if not completely, impossible to drain them, regardless of what anyone else says. The "ports" in a 3/4" valve are usually the same area as a 1/2" pipe, or less, and the port in a diverter is even smaller.

i have used that Delta valve before...the last one was 2 body sprays and 1 shower head...the pressure was weaker when they all went on at the same time...i ran 3/4 up to the valve

you need a 9 gpm valve....and i don't think the 1/2" delta highflow valve will do that much....the 3/4" one will cost $100+ more..but youd be safer with it

no need for shock arrestors on a shower.....unless its code in your area...i wouldn't worry what he does....you don't have a solenoid in your shower so it really isn't going to do anything anyways....

when you say 3/4 line to the second floor, 3/4 pex or 3/4 copper?

stand pipe water hammer arrestor has potential for legionaires disease to thrive.
besides being against the Canadian plumbing code, i dont think anyone uses these anymore...after a couple days they 'water log' and are no good anyway. personally, i would insist on not using that style.
