 Chain lost into the bowl
Author: sum (FL)

I replaced all the guts inside my Gerber toilet tank and got everything working.

But the chain from the FluidMaster kit is too long,

So I used a plier to break the chain in two, and the left over piece slipped out of my hand while the flapper was drawn up.

The chain went into the hole and disappeared. I reached my hand in there and it's gone.

It's probably too big to make it to the bottom of the bowl?

I flushed it a few times and it seemed fine.

So the chain is now stuck somewhere?

Will it affect the flush functionality? Should I worry or try to extract it? Will a coat hanger fishing around from the tank bowl hole work?

sum....forget about it. By the way, I could have told you that would happen. I'm surprised you didn't knock the tank off the bowl.

If the chain was stainless steel (not non-metallic ) you may have luck fishing with a magnet on a flexible handle - but don't force it to much - or if you are really bold a magnet "securely" attached to nylon string (thru hole in magnet etc). Lower grades of stainless steel are magnetic. Check the remaining chain that you do have.

Lee....I'm not being mean, and I think sum knows that. The way his luck has been going lately, it was bound to happen. I work on multi-million dollar pieces of equipment every day. If I don't put something under the area of the machine I'm working on,surer than you-know-what,I'll drop something. In my case it will be found when the machine starts up, and stops with a loud bang.

it may cause problems in the future because the portholes will clog and cause it to flush improperly . Don't worry about it unless it starts flushing funny

IT will NOT get into the rim holes, and therefore the toilet should NOT "flush funny", but if it does it is NOT because of the chain.

The thing is, I was anticipating the other end of the cut chain to drop, and thought...would it be funny if it drops right into this hole that would really make my day.

LOL.

I was actually holding the other end of the chain for this reason and it somehow slipped out of my hands.

I went and bought three Florida Powerball lottery tickets. I didn't win.

His slot machine also pays off to the first person who sits down when he has used all his money after 12 hours in front of it.

if the chain went down the flush valve and never came out into the bowl then yes it can cause problems in the future .
