Exterior Tankless Water Heater Condensate Drain
Author: HarryB (WA)

Am installing a condensing exterior tankless water heater in external box with condensate drain - plan to run CPVC line vertically down in conditioned/insulated space to just above bottom plate, then out thru siding with a short stub pointed down. Am concerned about freezing (stellactites/stellagmites) and/or snow buildup at exit. Installation is in Tacoma, WA - how is it done in really cold areas?? Recommendations?? Thanks. HarryB

I'd consider calling the manufacturer and finding out what they will warranty before you begin the installation. Let them know where you are located and the coldest outside temps.

What make, what model, and what does the I&O manual say?If the unit is designed for use as you have described, it will have clear directions how to do it properly. If you don't install it per manufacturers specs, you will void any warranty.

the condensate from the heater will drip into a "funnel" with an air space between. the bottom of the "funnel" will connect directly to the CPVC line you describe. if the CPVC line freezes at the outside end it will fill up and the "funnel" will overflow but the condensate drip will continue to work only it will spill out onto the floor.
by funnel i mean a 1 1/2 x 1/2 reducing coupling with the 1/2 side glued to the CPVC going outside and the 1 1/2 side positioned under and below the condensate tube of the heater.

Packy - Thanks - that is exactly the solution I was looking for! The I&O manuals do not have any practical information. HarryB

Most manufactures do not recommend outdoors installations in freezing climates.
