 Pipe insulation on cold supply
Author: Fixitangel (NC)

Just curious..Do you pros use pipe insulation to prevent condensation on cold water supply pipes? In the humid summertime I see alot of cold supply pipes that sweat alot esp. in dug out basements where there is no dehumifier. It's always more noticable where the supply enters the dwelling, near the pressure tank, etc.
Just wonder if the cold pipe will still sweat inside the foam jacket?

yes it will still sweat, unless the insulation has a 'vapor tight' jacket

It can only sweat if humid air reaches the pipe and insulation prevents that.

vapor tight / sealed insulation will prevent that

it all depends on the actual temperatures and 'dew points' involved

if your water is very cold and the air is very humid -> any moisture which penetrates the insul. and contacts the pipe will/may condense ... whether it will drip out ?

insulation retards heat transfer ... vapor barrier stops moisture migration ... you may need very very good insulation, or you may only need a 'schlom job' ... we can't tell from here
