 basement toilet
Author: Rmjohns43 (MI)

I just had my toilet installed in my basement. The floor is a wood veneer floating floor which is over a cement slab. The problem is that the toilet is not stable and wobbles a bit. Is there anything that could have been done to make the toilet more stable? This is going to drive me CRAZY!

Shims and silicone. I love good ole grout but you're not on tile.

Seems like your 'plumber' is a bummer for leaving you with an unstable set-up.

The first and most important is to screw the flange down. If that was done then the floor must not be even. That will require plastic shims to stabilize the bowl.

yeah, an uneven cement floor with veneer wood on it will give you a rocking toilet. shim/s and clear silicone will fix it.

a rocking toilets going to leak eventually

i always check them back and forth when im done

pull the toilet, make sure the flange is secure and screwed to the floor, reset the toilet and use a plastic shim where needed to make the toilet rock solid...

a loose toilet should be fixed for free by your plumber if its under 1 year

I always place the shims where needed to make the bowl sit solid before I place the wax seal in place.

I would use cedar shims you can buy for couple bucks ..use the shims as you would shimming a window or door frame.. be sure your toilet flange is bolted solid to the fllor too before doing the shimming.. knife off excess around bas of toilet enough to run a bead of bathroom grout caulking that comes in colors and textures to match existing grout should you have tile.

Why on earth would you use cedar shims when they make plastic ones specifically for toilets? And I've never heard of caulking grout. You mean sanded caulk?
