I have a PVCG series New Yorker Boiler (gas) and a Vaughn Top Performer Plus water heater (35 gal.). In April, the boiler and water heater stopped "talking" to each other. The thermostat on the water heater would call for hot water, but the boiler would not kick on unless I turned up the thermostat in the house.
My plumber came out and inspected/tested the components on both the boiler and water heater. He said that while the thermostat on the water heater and the ignition module on the boiler were working properly on their own, they weren't communicating. He got everything working and there was no problem with hot water for about 2 weeks. Then the problem started again, and the plumber returned and replaced both the TPI thermostat (water heater) and Honeywell ignition module (boiler).
Things were great for two months, but the problem has started happening once again. In order to have hot water, I have crank up the heat in the house for about 30 minutes. Since it's been in the 90s for the last week, this is not really an option.
Any ideas what could be going on? Both the boiler and water heater are about 4-5 years old.

we are not there to test it, so cannot answer, but after just 2 months, the repair person should guarantee his work.

Is the green LED on the ignition module flashing when this happens? If so....count consecutive flashes,or bright then dim. Go to HeatingHelp.com, and post this in the "GAS" section. There is a very knowledgable guy named Tim McElwain there. He will get you the answers to your questions, and will even contact the manufacturers rep, if necessary. All he would ask for his troubles, is that you keep him posted.

I can tell you that it is not likely that both the thermostat and the ignition module would go bad at the same time. Saying the thermostat is not communicating with the ignition module,is like saying a light switch is not communicating with a lamp.Either way, you don't re-wire the house.

Thanks for your replies! I'll visit the site you recommend.
This morning (lukewarm shower), the green indicator light on the water heater was blinking. There was no light at all on the boiler ignition module. When the boiler is firing, there's a blinking green. I agree that it makes no sense that two new parts would fail...so it must be something else, but what?
