 How Long Does Plumber's Putty Keep?

I was in the process of installing a new faucet when I grabbed my plumbers putty. It has become verrrry stiff. How long does it keep on the shelf? This container is essentially full, but it's five+ years old. I thought the advantage of using plumbers putty over caulk is it doesn't get hard.

For what it's worth, it's Oatey brand.

it gets hard

id throw out a 5 year old pale....id say it lasts a year or less

When the oil evaporates, it gets hard. You can knead linseed oil in to it to revitalize it.
