 Half inch brass sillcock/sweat.
Author: kingshakabobo (IL)

The halh inch sweat brass 1/4 turn ball sillcocks I'm using for my deck project are meant to have half inch copper sweated INSIDE the fitting. But I noticed the OUTSIDE diameter of the fitting fits neatly INSIDE a 3/4 inch "T" fitting.

Can I sweat that fitting directly inside the 3/4 "T" fitting? Seems like it will work. I'm guessing it's an either/or situation. Just double checking.

Yes, it'll sweat inside a 3/4" fitting.

Don't forget, sillcocks on a deck freeze.

I'm going to set it all up to drain for the winter.

I had a hairbrained idea pop in to my mind re: fire sprinklers on the deck. Since I'm running 3/4 lines up the back brick anyway. How would one get around the freeze issue? While googling, I saw some news accounts of exterior balcony/deck sprinklers in Colorado and Iowa saving properties. Those are cold climates. I'm in chicago.

I suppose summer sprinklers would be better than nothing. Summer is whan the grills are going every night. The building across the alley was just about gutted from a deck fire caused by smoking. But that was last winter or very early spring. Still cold. The fire broke through a window and gutted three units. No one killed or injured.

The bldg. owner is a little gun shy now. I had a fire in the fire-pit in the yard a couple weeks ago. He smelled smoke and called the FD.

A guy I work with was recently complaining about having to replace his pipe under his deck every year, even though he drains it. I'd use a Sharkbite ball valve, and remove it for the winter. You could use a rubber washer to seal the pipe at the house, and a rubber stopper(cork) for the winter.

Sprinklers is freezing areas are "dry" systems. When a head is activated water pushes the air out of the lines and puts out the fire. Afterwards it is drained again and the control valve is reset.

I know, obviously he wasn't getting all the water out.I've only ever seen glycol used in cold sprinkler systems. It's got to be a real challenge getting all the water out of a sprinkler system.

Do I need to worry about excess heat when sweating this little sillcock? It is a ball type valve with a 1/4 turn small plastic handle.

I figure I just remove the handle. Anything else to worry about?

If you heat it so much that the plastic handle would be damaged, then you DID overheat it.
