I have an old, circular gas valve on the line to my dryer. I need to shut it off to replace the dryer. I tried turning itclockwise and it turned completely and never seemed to stop. How can I tell if it's off.

Generally when the handle is perpendicular to the gas line, it is OFF. When it is inline, it is ON.
Unless a licensed plumber or gas fitter has recently advised you otherwise, consider having this valve replaced, as many old valves no longer seal properly, a condition that may be made worse by operating the valve.
Edit: OK, it's not clear if you're saying the body of the valve is circular, i.e. spherical, or if the handle itself on the valve is round. If the handle is round, and it doesn't stop, hopefully somebody else has an idea!

gas valves are typically 1/4 turn...your just turning it on/off/on/off it sounds like
turn the gas off at the meter if your not sure

well joan, by turning the valve a few times you now don't know if it is on, off or 1/2 way in between.
if i were there i would turn the valve, open the pipe slightly and if gas comes out, turn the valve until the gas stops coming out. if it never stops then i would tighten the pipe, turn off the gas meter and replace the valve.

I would recommend you consider having a professional take care of the problem .If you don't know what you are doing ,gas can kill you and others .Be smart and don't mess with it .JMO

you probably have a wedge style and yes they will go round and round.weather a handle or a top that you put a cresent wrench on ,they both are crosswways to the pipe means off and going up and down in the direction of the pipe is on.hope this is a little clearer.if this valve turns easely round aND ROUND YOU SHOULD HAVE A PLUMBER CHECH IT OUT,WEGEDES have a habbit of leaking if not properly adjusted.good luck
