 continuous loop hot water-additional info
Author: path (TX)

Additional Information:

Thank you for all your assistances. Someone asked for actual readings and how I was told this was to be read (which is being challanged by others in the 3 story (36,000sq ft) office building) We use this hot water only in bathroom sinks & in HVAC heating & A/C.These meter readings are for my building. There is one city water meter outside for the entire complex covering a city block, totaling in excess of 140,000 sq ft.So I cannot use that bill to determine my portion, as the other tenants have a restaurant, guest rooms, etc used 24/7.I have only an office building (36,000 of that 140,000sq ft) used 8am-5pm 5 days a week.

Last month cold-in 154,100 this month 159,200 = diff of 5100 gallons
Last month hot-in 1,446,700 this month 1,449,300 = diff of 2600 gallons
Originally I thought that those two difference gallons added together = 7700 total water heated & used in a month.

Last month hot water return 1,912,900 this month 1,975,060 = diff 62,160 This is the recirculating hot water that is not supposed to be in the equation, but this theory is being challanged.

I am asking for a definite formula to estabilish how much hot water is being heated and used per month using these 3 internal meters for my office building.

Thank you -

(Original question)

In our commercial building, we have a continuous loop of hot water to distribute instant hot water thoughout the massive building.

There are 3 internal water meters that would tell me what amount of water is being heated and used per month that is supposed to be for my section of the building.

But we have a disagreement of how to calulate the 3 actual meter readings: Cold water in-hot water in-hot water return.

All these figures gradually increase each month, so I know I have to use the prior month's figures in the equation.

I was told that the cold-in difference between last month's reading & this month's, added to the difference in the hot-in between last month's reading & this month's reading = the total gallons heated & used in that month.

The hot water return meter is continuously looping so that meter reading is not used in the calculation.

Please advise if this is the correct way to figure the water usage every month for my section of the building. Also, the city's water bill and the city is no help because there is only one actual outdoor water meter with different tenants needing to know their individual water usage per month.

Need to meter 2 things.....water into the building and cold water into the water heater. There's no need to calculate anything.Water enters the building and accounts for a water bill. Cold water only enters the water heater if hot water has been used.

I gather he is trying to isolate the usage for one section of the building. The water used could be measured, the hot used could be measured. How to put a number on the energy consumption will be harder/

Sorry......The poster threw me a curve ball, with mentioning the city.Cold water entering the hot water heater reflects water heated and used.It carries a little higher price, because it is recirculated and maintained at temperature. If I understand you correctly, and no hot water is being used, the hot water-in,and hot water return, are the same reading.

I am not sure if you are trying to make it more difficult than necessary. The "hot water out", minus the "circulation in" would be the actual hot water used.

I was told that the cold-in difference between last month's reading & this month's, added to the difference in the hot-in between last month's reading & this month's reading = the total gallons heated & used in that month.

This would be easier for me to understand if you listed the current and past month's readings for each meter and then showed the step-by-step calculations you are (or were) using to answer the question.
