I have had a Grundfos up10-16bn5/atlc circulating pump in my home for 8-years. It has been making alot of noise when running. I have taken it apart and cleaned it as the manual recommends, but it has not stopped making noise. The stainless steel impeller/housing have a coating of iron deposits on it that I have not tried to scrub off. Is this advisable? Is this the likely source of the noise? The pump seems to be working fine except for the noise.

Actually, what you need to do depends on WHAT the noise sounds like. It could be any of several things, i.e., air, cavitation, motor bearings, etc., but each of them has a distinctive sound and correction.

What is your advice? The sound varies from no sound at all at times, to ticking, to almost grinding sounds.
Thanks

The manual recommends cleaning deposits off the impeller with a brush and water, and cleaning the impeller passages. If you didn't do that, what did you clean? Is the pump mounted with the motor on top?

Yes, I did clean the impellor and impellor passages as the manual recommended. I went home at lunch and cleaned them with liquid iron out (tooth brush and soft rag) and was able to get the iron removed from the stainless steel impellor and the housing that is sits in. I reinstalled it and cycled the power five times as the manual instructs and left it running. It is much quieter, but louder than than new. It just sounds like the impellor is gliding over a less than smooth surface. I, also, removed as much iron deposit off the brass mounting base that the unit screws into.

Did you see any signs of the impeller rubbing, or hitting anything? Did you check the impeller for wobble,or end-play?With reasonable pressure it should not wobble(side to side), or move in and out from the motor. If either of these conditions exist, it's probably time for a new pump.
