moved in this place and the heater has never worked. found a chipped vent stack made of abspestos cement in the attic for this heater.
I called San Diego building code. the property owner was cited for non working or mantained heater, water heater and vent, and not smoke/carbon detectors.
it took them almost 3 weeks to replace water heater/vent. the detectors they installed.
they had a heating co come out here and lite this old furnace/heater. it took them a good 1.5 hours to get it lit.
The owner wants the antique heater fixed.
The tech said it only had a lifespand of 30 years and that would have been around 1970. He turned off the gas.
Said it was extremely expensive to remove the vent pipe and you could not repair it.
He said he would do a write up on fixing the old heater and a write up on putting a new heater in the apartment. this was about a month ago.
san diego building code sent notice civil penalty notice and order- compliance period start soon
The Landlord has not done anything or made any arrangements to fix this hunk o junk heater.
Would the tech have to remove the old unit and the hazard vent pipe also.
Thank you so much to anyone who answers.
i am disabled from a traumatic brain injury.
God Bless,
Brody

In the past in San Diego, we were allowed to "abondon in place" the old transite ( asbestos ) flue pipe, meaning you took it out, wrapped in plastic, and left it in the attic. Somehow I suspect that may no longer be allowed,
There will be the labor of opening the wall to install it and the new flue, and of course roof work to run the new oval B-vent through the roof.
