What I want to do is have the ability to switch between raw well water and softened/treated well with a valve with 2 inlets and one outlet. i want to be able to select by turning only one handle/lever. I know I can use two valves and a tee but i dont want to close one valve and open the other. If this type of valve exists what is it called?
( i want to use raw well water for watering lawn/plants and treated water for washing car

It is called a "three way valve", BUT, you cannot just connect the well system to it. You will need an RPPBFP backflow preventer to keep the pump water from EVER entering the city system through the house piping.

It was always my understanding that municipalities will do everything possible to protect their water, with a complete separation between city water and well waters. Creating such a device or union to blend such waters may be frown upon and might be unlawful in some areas. I would suggest checking with your local water authority. (am i wrong?)

Thanks for everyones help. I wont be having municipal water mixing with well water... just water straight from the well( for lawn watering) and well water that is run thru softener (for washing/rinsing car)going to a hose bib outside

echo, you'll have to forgive hj, he's in depression over the D'backs and wheelchair is also down in the dumps over the cubs.
the 3 way valve will work provided you intend to use only one outlet at a time. it is perfectly legal to do what you want. only time it's gets difficult is as hj suggested, having 2 water sources in the same house.

Municipalities and codes do NOT worry about what you ARE doing, they are concerned about what COULD happen. Such as a person here a couple of years ago who used water from a duck pond to water his yard, but left a valve open and pumped a million gallons of the polluted water into the city system. They do not know how many people went to their doctors with flue like symptoms.

not that it applies to my situation... why couldn't one use a simple check valve to prevent well water or any other source of water ..to prevent backflow to the municipal system?
