 Shawshank Redemption escape from prison
Author: sum (FL)

In the movie The Shawshank Redemption when Tim Robbins escaped from prison, he used a rock to break a sewer pipe.

Was that a cast iron pipe or a clay pipe? How could it break so easily?

When it broke a gush shot up, seem to suggest the pipe was under pressure, yet when he stuck his head into the hole, the pipe was only about 10% full...that's impossible, right?

Sum, sorry to let you down. The tooth fairy, santa claus, the easter bunny and hollywood movies are all illusions. Breaking a clay sewer pipe with a rock. maybe. I've seen some clay pipes break when nipped by a shovel. Cast Iron? Not as easy. Big enough rock, maybe.

If he was inside the pipe breaking out, a rock MIGHT do it, but breaking from the outside he is working against the compression forces of the curved pipe. But the larger the pipe, the easier it is, unless the pipe gets much thicker in the process of making it larger. It is very difficult to break into a clay pipe, even when we have to in order to make a connection, and case iron pipe is almost impossible without a heavy hammer.

well? what kind of pipe?

if you were the plumber called in to fix the hole he created how would you do it? cut a section off and use large diameter coupling? or patch it with some roofing felt and tar?

1. They do NOT have "large diameter pipes" running through a room, above ground, unless they are cast iron or steel.
2. A cast iron pipe, that large, would need a sledge hammer to break into it, and then it would NOT make a "neat" hole.
3. Any hole a man could fit through would need a new section of pipe installed.
4. Obviously, if water sprayed out of the top of the pipe, for whatever reason, it would mean the pipe was full of water, and the water level would NOT drop just because he put a hole in the pipe, unless the hole was on the bottom so the water could drain out and flood the room.

that's why I asked because I didn't think it made sense he broke the pipe and water gushed four feet high and then it was only 3" deep inside that pipe that must be a 24" diameter pipe, and I couldn't figure out what pipe he could break that easy with a rock. If you look at where he exited the pipe into the creek the pipe was really thick may be more than an inch thick.

So the conclusion is the script writer didn't know plumbing...yes?

Script writers do not know plumbing, or electric, or automobiles, or ........! All they know is what makes a good story.

LOL..I drive people crazy when I constantly pick apart tv and movies. The ones that piss me off the most is the frequent scene where thay have an incompetent husband or handyman do repairs and when a toilet is flushed the garbage disposal comes on, or the garage door opens, among other things. Or when they flip a light switch and plumbing problems occur.

Or they light a match and the whole fire sprinkler system turns on flooding the entire building.

Or they fire 10 rounds from a 6 shot revolver (without reloading) at point blank range and still miss the target. Duh. :think2:

The A-Team and their opponents could fire entire belts of ammo and only hit the ground.

If you think you automatically hit something at close range, check out the video of the Ohio State Patrol officers and two bad guys blasting at each other at about 10 feet apart. Lots of bangs and nobody hit!

Personnally, I do not think policemen know how to aim their guns. Many times I read of gunfights where hundreds of rounds were fired and they did not hit anybody.
