 busted kitchen drain pipe
Author: unlucky landlord (IL)

The drain pipe for the kitchen sink is old cast iron and it has rusted out. It leads into the basement where is goes into the cinderblock foundation. The pipe is busted all the way into the cinder block. We have installed a 6" to 4" reducing compression coupling over the top of the busted pipe to connect it to the new pvc we ran for the kitchen drain. However, when tightened down completely it still drips. Is there a way to fill the gap caused by the size discrepency? We were thinking about maybe using roofing cement and then that stuff you can use to wrap leaking pipes (can't think of what it's called but it sort of looks like a cast when it's dry) Or, does the cinder black need to be broken?

When it comes to Professional Plumbing, the Right Way is the only way. What you tried to do is not right. A "bandaid" fix is not going to resolve any drip issue. Please consider doing the job right. If you as the owner of the property feel that you can not perform the job correctly... hire a licensed plumber.
As the owner of the property, you may face a health issue in not doing the job correctly and that could cost you so much more....

Best Wishes
