can't remove compression nut from supply line
Author: goldsmit (FL)

Try as I might, I cannot get the compression nut off my supply line to fix a leak on my toilet. The line is rather old (12 years) and is the original plumbing. I've hit it with WD40 and used 2 pliers but it's not moving at all. I'm worried I might damage the line if I keep at it. Any tips on getting this thing off? I don't want to have to buy an expensive tool for a one time use thing.

thanks

my terminology may be wrong. The nut I'm talking about is the nut the supply line to the toilet is emerging from (the red arrow is pointing to it).

thanks

Have you removed the valve handle to get better leverage? If you can't spin the thing off and you're replacing the supply hose anyway, cut (hacksaw) and pry off the hose nut being careful not the damage the threads on the valve nipple.

Are you turning it counter clockwise? A crescent wrench is the basic tool you can/should use. Hold onto the shut off valve with one hand and turn the nut via the crescent wrench with the other.

Unless you are a total wimp, or turning it the wrong way, it should unscrew very easily, especially once you rotate it very little in a CCW direction.

using pliers may have distorted the nut slightly. use a 5/8 open end wrench.

remove handle for better 'angle' on hold-back (use a GOOD adj. wrench)

cut the supply tube just above nut (cheap to replace)

use a 5/8" BOX END wrench and turn CCW (looking down onto nut)

making sure of hold-back .... apply gradually increasing force ... it WILL come loose

Measure twice, cut once.

turn the main water supply off.

drain the water out of the system.

unscreww the packing nut from the stop.

unscrew the valve handle(the stem, handle and packing nut will come out as one assembly)

place an open ended wrench on the valve body and a 5/8" open ended wrench on the compression nut for the supply line. use the bottom wrench to hold the valve body(be careful not to damage the fine threads for the packing nut) and use the top wrench to remove the compression nut for the supply line.

Hope this helps.
