 soldering closed systems
Author: ericsandstone (MD)

I have been having a problem when attaching RPZ's back into systems after removing them for retiling of walls or relocating piping. I am opening the valves and the boiler drain valve as well to allow steam out but, we have had valves upstream not holding well and the RPZ's seem to be retaining water despite efforts.

This morning the only way to get an RPZ re-attached was to solder the pipe I needed with the system still open (as opposed to closed). upstream of the RPZ there is a double check valve. This allowed me to loosen the nut to the double check for the system to be open.

Is there a way to get all of the water out of an RPZ or am I missing the point; that it's often just a pain to close up existing piping and solder it?

Without knowing what, and how, you are soldering it, we cannot advise you. I would think that any water in the RPZ would be far enough away from any solder joint that it would not create a problem. Leaking valves, however, WILL create a problem unless you can deflect the water before it gets to where the joint is.

You might which to change over to union installs.I just pull the checks from both sides of the rpz.
