 offset flange. Ideas?
Author: hillbillyles (MO)

Here is a good picture of what I am trying to install my new commode onto. It is set into the concrete pad of the home we are getting ready to move into so cannot easily access the flange to change it.

The oval opening is about 3/4" to 1" longer(same width)than the standard round wax ring I have and I have not found any wax rings or seals in oval shape. I also have had no luck in finding any type of oval to round adapter.

Since it is sold with that shape opening I would think there would be a matching ring or adapter available but have had trouble just finding a picture of the flange...much less a matching ring.

Any ideas on how to install/seal it or where to get a (oval/oblong) wax ring?

Thanks-
L

Too big to show as a pic and cannot get it to load as a link so here is a DIY link to the pic:

you install the bolts into the slots of the flange and install a normal wax ring onto the horn of the toilet bowl.

The upper slot is backwards from how they are usually arranged, but there is NO wax seal that fits it. You have to buy two seals, then cut one and fit it around the back side, then cut a piece out of the second one to fill in the gap. It MUST be molded so it fits over the entire perimeter. Putting a conventional ring on the outlet of the toilet will NOT seal it.

There are two plastic tabs stick out from the inner side wall of the flange. Near the northwest corner of the picture.

WHAT IS THAT?

The perimeter of that flange is round...like every flange I've ever seen. Why would you have to buy 2 and put them together?

hj, you are correct. i have never used that type of offset flange so i never thought about what you described.
so, of course the entire flat surface of the flange must be covered.

paul, i'm guessing that the toilet horn does not sit directly over the center of the round flange, like a bullseye so the diameter of the wax ring is too small to reach the front ??

I'm guessing that those 2 tabs that sum is asking about are there to stop the wax ring from falling in. Looks like a clog waiting to happen, to me.

That flange can offset to either side also. The tabs you see have a hole between them for a closet bolt if you are offsetting sideways. There is a third slot for the other bolt. Yes, the closet bolt will be inside the flange so it had better be brass.

Thanks for the answer to use 2 and cut one to use on either end to form. I would just think if they manufactured an odd shape that would need to be sealed there would be someone who made either an oval/oblong wax ring or an adapter plate that would convert the oval opening to a round one.

BTW, the commode outlet does sit just off of the center of the oval when the mounting bolts are at 12" from the wall. The front part of the oval opening is covered or nearly covered (if I manipulate the wax on the front just a bit) by the round ring. It is just the rear "toenail" shaped opening left when the round ring is set on the flange where the commode sits.

I seem to remember years ago they used to make a "waxed rope" type seal for commode to flange sealing which might work in this case but I haven't had the need to look for one in years so I don't know if they are even still available. Thoughts on that idea...assuming the "wax rope" is even still available?

Again, thanks-
Les

So the purpose of this offset flange is to convert a riser that's for a 10 or 11 inch rough in to fit a toilet with a 12" rough in?

Is there any difference between these kinds with oval openings versus those offset flanges with round openings? Any advantages specifically?

That is for the closet bolt if you have to offset the toilet sideways. The problems with actually using them, however, is that it puts the closet bolt INSIDE the wax seal where there is no seal, AND the tabs break off after a couple of years. IF the flange were round, (actually it is oval which is why there is a "shelf" next to the opening), then there would have to be an offset in the riser to move the flange offcenter. With this type of offset flange, the shelf is a potential clog point, since it is right under the toilet's outlet opening.

If it did, they would NOT need the offset flange.

This one does NOT have the "shelf" but it also needs a lower/shorter riser because it takes up more length. It can also be rotated 360 degrees to move the toilet in any direction.

it does appear that the only way to install a toilet over this type flange is to turn the bowl upside down, dam off the bolt holes, melt 4 or 5 wax rings in a soup pan and pour the liquid into the space under the bowl filling it entirely, similar to pouring a lead joint.
something like this only more wax..

That would be the most difficult way to do it, but if you are working time and material, and was having a slow day, it would help your bottom line.

A 10" toilet will be cheaper.
