New hot water placed 2 yrs ago. My parents have lived in this house for over 30 yrs. Never had odor before. Have drained hot water heater, helped for very short time first time drained, not at all 2nd time drained. Have researched some say take anode rod out, others say replace. PLEASE HELP.

Remove or replace the anode rod.

Replace the anode rod with one made of a different metal. They are usually either magnesium or aluminum.

you need to be aware of the type anode and the heater use, Before you can control!a vacation home use is solid.a used home needs attention!!No flow anode will bubble the water .Add a softener and double the anode use/non use, trouble!!!where you have a used heater you should anodize toward the aluminium type.Where the specified magnesium type seems failed.

The odor comes from a magnesium rod, usually in conjunction with a water softener.

We have no water softner. On well water. Only have smell in house since placed new water heater.

You might try increasing the temp. of the water a little. Sometimes that will help.

your water heater manufacturer or!!! /the installing plumber\ should be able to correct as said.
