 Going on Vacation
Author: Lee (NJ)

Hello:

What do you guys - Expert Professional Plumbers do when you are not going to be home for a week or two? I am going away and am concerned about water damage. Do you guys turn off your water to the house before you leave on vacation?

I have city water and an Oil Burner. Oil Burner heats water for shower etc. using a Tankless Coil(a coil I believe?).

Do I just turn lever off at wall where water comes into house?

Should I turn Oil Burner off?

Anything else you guys would do before you go away?

Thank You

dont read my post,lol
I ALWAYS shut my water main off, dump my ice maker in my freezer and shut the arm off, put a timer on my lights, shut my water heater off ( electric ) I would shut your boiler off or turn it way down..
I had a problem because my water main didnt shut off because it was missing a washer, well I have now changed that to a new ball valve and when I go again will shut the main off and leave a lower level faucet hot and cold cracked open JUST in case :)

yeah, shut the water at the lever where it comes in from the street. shut the oil burner emergency switch.

you may want to test the water shutoff to make sure to SHUTS OFF. Shut it off and open a lower level faucet and see if it drains and stops running.
Is it a gate tyoe valve ( screws in ) or a ball type ( single handle lever that just twists half way ) ?

Man HJ is gonna be so proud of me :)

I think you have the right idea. You also may want to stop the mail and newspapers and if you trust a neighbor with a house key. Call the police and tell them when you will leave and return. Have a timered light and a loud radio with rock n roll. Its cheap, but works. Now go and have a great vacation!
Best Wishes

I just lock the door and drive away. Daughter comes by and gets the mail occassionally and checks the house.
