 symmond balancing spindle stuck
Author: coopns

I installed the symmonds valve and I noticed only luke warm hot water. A bit of research and I took apart the valve and the balancing spindle is stuck, I guess it should move when shaken. Any thoughts on how to get it unstuck? I tried in vinegar, not sure how are to tap it?

Replace it.Even if you free it up, it will probably get stuck again very quickly.

take the cartridge out and tap the handle end against a piece of wood. a sharp tap and all will be well.
by the way, don't take this as wrong, but did you read the directions.
P/S, i usually don't read them either.

paul, i disagree. the valve is new. it is tested at the factory using water. it then sits on a shelf for many months. the residual water will cause the balancing spindle to (sort of) corrode in place. i automatically tap all symmons valves before i install them. never had one stick after loosening.

So I can crack it pretty hard. Can I spray some PB blaster in there or WD40?

Can I hit it too hard? Is there anything to break?

I saw someone mentioned Simple Green.

Thanks for the help.

don't spray anything on it. just remove the cartridge and give it a sharp rap on a piece of wood. as i said, hit the end with the grooves on it onto the wood.

Packy, I read the instructions. It say "tap" not "rap"
then again... I could have read it wrong (smiling)

I did bang it pretty hard a number of times and sprayed it with WD40 and she loosened up and I could feel it moving. Sure enough, the old hot water came out. I contacted symmons and they said they would send out a new spindle.

Thanks for all the advice.

Congrats! I guess "Banging" is better then "Rap" or "Tap" in producing better results. I'll add that to my list.

Will the WD40 foul things up? I guess I should probably just install the new spindle when it arrives from symmonds.

WD40 did no good but it will do no harm either.
