Our kitchen sink drain was blocked for several days. We first thought it is clogged by food grease. We payed a plumber to open the clog with an electronic snake. He easily inserted the snake in and reached the main line in the basement. However, the water flow is still kind of slow. He think the vent under the sink (Magic Vent) is broken, and suggested us to replace one. We bought a new studor minivent from Home depot and replaced the old one. The drain is still slow with the vent on, but it became much faster when I removed the vent from the short vertical pipe. I can feel gas pressure from below when I removed it. I did some research online. It seems the AAV alows air in when there is a negative pressure in the pipeline when discharge and it blocks the sewer gas coming out. I don't know why my new vent still does not work, why the gas pressure in the pipeline is higher than outside?

If you believe the plumber did infact snake the drain properly I would heat up a pan of simmering near boiling water and pour down the drain, as you remarked about grease. Then check the vent. Remove it. shake it try the drain without it Then reinstall

The reason you get a positve pressure when you remove the studor vent is because the air is being trapped somewhere between the trap and where the drain ties into the main line. Assuming there is a vent thru the roof somewhere in your home, the line for the kitchen sink either has a belly thats full of water, or is still clogged. I would question what type drain snake the plumber used and whether he completly cleaned the pipe.

Your mini-vent is working EXACTLY the way it is supposed to. Your problem is in the drain line itself, which has an obstruction, but the obstruction could be something as simple as a flooded drain line caused by a flooded septic system due to a lot of rain. That is just an example of possible causes, but there are a myriad of other possibilities. ANYTHING that prevents the air from evacuating when the water tries to drain WILL prevent good drainage, but a properly vented sink would not have the problem, which is why GOOD plumbers try NOT to use Mini-vents.

by law, no plumber in massachusetts, good or bad, is allowed to used a mini-vent.

And you REALLY think a "bad" plumber is going to worry about that?
