New K304 valve leaking after accidentally turning screw
Author: MyWifeDidItISwear (CA)

So uh.. My wife, yeah, my wife, was installing a shower trim kit and SHE turned the screw on the left side of the valve on what I believe is called the collar. When SHE realized the plastic part from the trim kit attached to the threaded holes 90* from the screw he, uh i mean she was turning she stopped. It was too late though. Water started pouring out of the tub filler. I turned the water off from the main valve and screwed the screw back in. I installed the kit but when I turned the water back on it still poured out of the tub filler.

Did I, uh I mean she, ruin it? Can I pull both screws out and maybe adjust the orings or is there more to it than this? I am afraid that If I make the wrong move I will end up having to pull off the tile to replace the valve. Any help is appreciated.

you / she probably loosened a cartridge retaining screw
turn off the water and reinstall cartridge:

He, she, I? You must have an unusual marital arrangement. You cannot "ruin" a valve by removing the wrong screw, but you can let things get out of place by doing so. You may have to remove the mechanism and reinstall it after making sure all the seals are in their right places.

kohler 304k's have 2 o-rings at the back of the cartridge...if they become dislodged water will flow through

take the cartridge out, use Vaseline or plumbers grease on the 2 o rings to keep them in place and reinstall the cartridge....if you dont stick the o rings in place they typically fall out while trying to install the cartridge...

this is why i dont take them apart anymore to solder them...its a very typical issue with 304ks

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I finally got around to taking it apart. I cleaned the o-rings and lubed them up w/a tiny bit of vaseline. Slid everything back in together and screwed the collar back on. It worked perfectly. Thanks again!!
