Desperate to find solution to a leak
Author: Alec (Non-US)

Hello,

I have been trying to cure a leak between a 1/2 inch transition brass threaded rod and a female straight connector. I have tried PTFE and hemp paste. I am using approx 10 turns with the PTFE. Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks for reply,

16mm plastic pipe from hot tank to bath, then converted from plastic to brass compression, needs longer threaded pipe with female connector due to thickness of wall, leak is where the brass threaded rod connects to female connector.

someone may remember the name, i can't. there is a plumbing product that looks like dental floss. it comes on a plastic roll and even has one of those metal edges that you pull it thru to cut it.
wrap it onto the threads, apply pipe dope and tighten.

String packing? l But dental floss would work!

When you say plastic pipe, are you saying pex? All the sealing is done at the ferrule(sleeve). With soft tubing, you must use an insert,to make the tube rigid against the compression of the ferrule. Sealing the threads, as you describe, should not be necessary.

What you have through the tank wall is a (?home-made?) bulkhead fitting! The exposed threads are probably not tapered as you would need for a pipe fitting.

Try using Perma-Tex #1 ..... good luck if you ever need to remove later !

European metric pipe threads are usually "straight threads" and need copious amounts of thread tape to seal them.

Sorry...I was on the wrong side of the fitting. You are trying to "marry" standard pipe thread into a metric fitting? If I am finally on the same page, you need a thread adaptor.

I'm all confused. I thought he was connecting metric plastic pipe to 1/2" brass. By tank I assumed he was referring to his hot water heater.
