I have a three handle shower/bathtub. The water flow has to be readjusted several times to keep the tempiture. It is hot then cold, them warm, etc. One plumber says it needs the mixer replaced. That would entail cutting away shower wall and then putting a metal plate over the cutout area.
Another plumber says that a three handle shower/bath has no mixer.
Can you help idenitfy with fact.

Obviously, it HAS a mixer, because you have two handles and one center spout for the water to come out. What you do NOT have is a pressure balancer to keep the hot and cold in balance. It is possible to install a "remote" pressure balancer on a valve like yours, but you still have to have access to the pipes in the wall.

Thank you for your input. When a plumper tells you that 3 handle shower bath combinations do not have mixers you tend to believe him.
thanks again.

Well, if you heard correctly and that is what he said, then maybe he was NOT a "plumber".

The gut who said "no mixer" probably meant it did not have pressure balance.

the first plumber was advising a balancer type valve replacement.the second has no clue.all valve's have a mixer where they divert to shower.the use of them is no longer legal because they cannot balance pressure!!!Be sure you understand the difference before you pay for lost flow at the water heater.
