We have a three handle shower, hot, cold and diverter. I replaced the hot and cold valve stems two years ago. Starting several weeks ago the hot water doesn't come on right away like it should when we turn the handle. We have to turn it off and on a few times before it's got pressure. Also, twisting the handle about 3/4 turn is more effective, when it used to only take about 1/4 turn. This shower has a diverter valve that's about forty years old, but I think the trouble is with the hot water stem. My best guess is the screw at the seal end of the stem came loose, so it's not letting water flow easily. I would just go and remove it and inspect it, but I live in a condo and the main valve shuts off the water to several other apartments, so when I do this I gotta post notices in advance, etc. What do you think?

If it is the hot water, you should just have to turn off the water to the water heater, but that sounds like the most reasonable cause.

If you have an individual water heater, you could just shut that off.
When removing, and reinstalling, the hot stem....DON'T do that with the valve turned to the OFF postition. The seat interferes. Open the valve at least half way.
When you have the stem out, make sure the seat inside the valve is tight.

simply tighten the screw that holds the washer to the end of the hot stem.it has backed off.

It's all fixed.
Problem was that the screw on the washer end of the stem had backed out a lot.
Tightened up that bad boy, reinstalled the stem and she's good to go.
Thank you again for your insight and offerings!
