Vacation Home - Shut off the water?
Author: chillin.in.florida (FL)

Hi,

When leaving an older house with copper plumbing for a period of months, we shut off the water main.

1. Is it necessary to shutoff all sink petcocks?
2. Should the water lines be "bled"?
3. Any other tips?

Thx!

Since I assume that the house is in Florida, there won't be any harm done in doing so. Be sure to turn off the power or gas to the water heater while you are at it. Also, keep in mind that the traps in your sinks and tubs/showers may evaporate and allow sewer gas inside. It would be a good idea to fill them with an anti-freeze compound that is glycol-based. This won't evaporate. You should be able to get this from any RV shop.

1. No.
2. No, unless their is a chance of freezing while you are away.
3. Turn a gas water heater to "vacation" or turn off the power to an electric one.
