 Aging water softener
Author: Janene (MI)

My water softener is about 20 years old and have been told I need to change the aging resin. Is this true? My softener seems to working just fine and we have cleaned the salt barrel and check the mechanics, which seem to be working fine, as well. If we do need to change the resin, how will I know what grain the resin/zeolite(synthetic) is? We would like to do this ourselves as the cost for the manufacturer to do it is ridiculous. Could you give us any advice for this procedure. Thanks.

For the amount of time and cost of materials, I just replace the softener, which means I get the most up to date controller, new components, and a full warranty.

Agreed, by the time you disconnect the softener rinse it out, buy new resin, and reinstall you'll probably be ahead to just replace it.

I have to agree with the previous suggestions. The current models of water softeners are real salt, water and money savers. Contact a local Plumber or Water Treatment Dealer and get the stories on the latest. Avoid buying on the Internet or Big Box stores (Sears, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. Buy local.

I could only advise to test the in coming water and out of the softener water. You may be using a devise not needed.incoming quality changes where well water is concerned.so save the removal so a second test for hardness, cold or dry spell.by-pass and turn off electrical power. You will note changes where soft uses less soap and feels as said, soft.Or not needed.

ive been told that water softeners are designed for 15 years...obviously depending on use

at 20 id start saving for a new one

ive never heard of anyone replacing the media

you'd go through the expense of it and 1 week later the 20 year old electronics would go

replace it
