 Sump Pump Running Repeat
Author: TRJ (OH)

Earlier today I went in the basement to find the water level above the sump pump's floater. I pulled the float back up over water level and the pump kicked on and drained the water out then shut off just like it should. Then the pit filled back up with water. The pump kicked back on and drained only to have the pit filled back up again.

This has been going on for about 20 minutes now with the pit repeatedly filling and being drained. I'm concerned that the pump will burn out if this keeps up (and where is all that water coming from?).

i have installed pumps at houses with ground water issues that go off every 30 seconds....the pumps i installed keep running for years...i recommend changing float switches yearly for them though

has it rained a lot by you?

do you have a check valve on the pump discharge?

Check your gutters. If they overflow, that can cause saturation in the foundation soils.

The water is coming from the ground area where it backed up when the pump did not start, or the check valve is not working and it is sucking the water back into the pit when the pump stops.

After about 2 hours it finally stopped. I checked the switch and it worked fine. Must have just been too much ground water from when it was not running as the last poster mentioned.

Thanks for the help!
