 Pool pump connection
Author: gregstren (GA)

I have an above ground pool pump that had a lint trap connection and the trap male thread connector broke. I was able to acquire a new lint trap bucket but the connection is different.

The pump has a 1 ½ male thread connector and the lint trap has a 2” female connector. I will need a male thread 2’’ connector with a 1 ½ “ female reducer to make the connection. I am having a hard time finding such a connector/reducer. I do have a female 2” to female 1 ½” female reducer I could use, and would need a 2” male nipple. This seems to be my best option but I am not sure if I should use PVC or CPVC (black). The main thing is at the local hardware store they told me the threads on PVC were different than the pool connection thread. Can you suggest the best connection for me in order to connect the lint trap and the pump.

You need a 1 1/2 x 2 pvc bushing. It sounds like you have a reducing coupling, which would also work, but you need a 2" nipple?

If the trap was part of the pump, then it probably does have a "unique" thread, in which case NOTHING will mate to it properly and be leak proof. Otherwise a common 2" x 1 1/2" thread by thread bushing will do what you want.

You might have been better off to just pay the price for the mfg product than to try to adapt a different product.note the sealing point and may find file flatting the end of the pvc nipple or use of sch 80 pvc nipple might be a better choice.Where the fitting seal is o-ring to nipple.hard to guess, but have dealt with this type pool fitting variation before.
