I hava a symmons temptrol shower handle. It is set up with a single bar handle that regulates on and off. It goes into a smaller circle and then a larger circle up against the wall plate. It is leaking where the smaller circular piece meets the larger circular piece. It does this when turned off. I hope I explained this somewhat reasonably. Please advise what to do. I am not what you call a handyman so I need simple explanations. Thank you

There are NOT always "simple explanations" and if you do not know what you are doing, you could damage the valve creating an expensive repair. Call a plumber.

I agree with HJ, but a much different reason. Your state of Mass discourages homeowners from performing their own plumbing repairs. Hire a licensed plumber and have both peace of mind and a shower that doesn't drip.

If you go to symmons.com you can find repair diagrams for your valve. Symmons is an excellent shower valve, and eminently repairable. The parts are a little pricey, but long lasting. You will also need some special tools, such as the seat wrench set. Symmons is not the easiest first-time project, but if you study up, you can do it.
As to the MASS laws, I am not sure, but I think a homeowner IS allowed to do simple faucet and shower repairs. You are banned from doing much else by $2500 penalties!
First you need to determine whether you have a Temptrol, or an older Safetymix version. Then you can get the correct parts.
In fact, if you start right here with the forum sponsor, there are 3 pages of parts illustrations. This should help.

By Mass law the only thing that someoe who does not hold a plumbing license is allowed to do is change a packing in a faucet. As Jimmy-O said they are a great valve but the parts are pricey and you need speciality tools. So I would say hire a plumber.

Tim...... does the law get very specific? i.e. does changing out a symmons or moen cartridge fall under the category of "changing the packing"??

What difference does it make, as long as nobody reports you to the "plumbing police"?

"What difference does it make"....
i'll tell you what difference it makes, IT IS ILLEGAL. just as it is illegal to install a fixture without a trap or to properly vent that trap. as for the plumbing police, not only they are on the lookout for someone working on their own home, their wives will report any plumbing activity they see. i kid you not. they even report the electric company for changing a street lightbulb without having a police detail getting time and a half with a four hour minimum.

I appreciate your responses. I am going to get a plumber. I have phoned several but none have returned my calls. I think the job is too small. This is the problem that I run into when I need professional help. I turn to you for advice. Again I thank you for providing this forum.
