WHY are there overflows on vanities and bathtubs, but not on kitchen sinks and laundry tubs? What is the history on this?

I will say that the overflows on vanities are becoming a thing of the past because the overflow is hardly ever used consequently will grow bacteria. A sink that is attended to needs no overflow, it is unlikely that someone will start filling the kitchen sink and leave for an extended period of time

i recently learned a bath tub is the ONLY fixture in WI that must have a overflow
some undermount lav sinks have no overflow
little kids are left in bathrooms alone, so i think the overflows are a good idea...and the kitchen sink is much bigger, so it would take a lot longer to over flow it
i think the answer to your question is just simple logic

Children are less able to reach higher counter faucets.and most capable overflows will only lesson over flow, not stop it.Lessor fixture works, makes the configuration, out dated.God knows I would be happy if fixture surfaces still just had to drain toward the fixture.but even that seems to allude code values.
