hot water heater temperatures too high
Author: pjgabriel (IA)

I have a new Bradford White hot water heater. On the temp. setting for 120 degrees it does say "approximately", which I would allow +/- 10 degrees, but it actually runs almost 20 degrees hotter. For the 98 degree setting, it runs about 118 degrees. My plumber will replace it if I want him to......or should I just turn it down? I really feel it is running way too high, on any setting. I would appreciate any comments.

Adjust it to a safe temperature and save your money for vacation.

It sounds like the thermostat is functioning properly and doesn't need to be replaced.

A new one will likely have the same deviation.

Spending a little time to check the actual water temperature when the water heater reaches its maximum temperature (as soon as the thermostat shuts off) should be a one time event, so just turn the one you have down to anything under 120 deg.F. that you are comfortable with.

You could call the water heater manufacturer about the deviation for peace of mind.

They used to use letters for the temperature dial so that you did NOT expect it to be some specific number. Just adjust the dial to give the temperature you are comfortable with and forget about what the number on the dial is.
