Hi All,
I am having a hard time determining if a particular piece of pipe I pulled from underneath my foundation is extraheavy or service weight cast iron. Unfortunately, after digging up the area around the ptrap and removing it (picture attached), I chucked the pipe into the garbage. At this point I have a very viable hub in good condition I am planning on inserting a Tyler Gasket or Fernco donut into.
Can anyone tell me how I can determine if the following pipe was Extra Heavy or Service Weight? Apparently, there are different gaskets for the differents types of cast iron pipes.
I have a picture of what I threw out and can send it. I just don't have a place to post it to online. I can use a micrometer to measure the inner diameter of the hub that I will be inserting into if that might be able to help me.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice,
Matt

Here's a posting of the picture (rather large, my appologies).

extra heavy will be clearly marked on the outside of the hub. it will say XH
service weight will be marked SV.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the old pipe as it was thrown into the garbage. Is there anyway I can measure the inner diameter of the existing hub to figure out if the current hub is extra heavy or service weight?
Thanks,
Matt

Look at the hub that you are going to insert the gasket into .It should have the SV or xh on it .jmo

The existing hub is the part that you have to know what it is. Look on the outside of the hub to see if it is XH or SV.

Extra heavy cast iron soil pipe was not, to my knowledge, coated with anything and service weight is coated with a black colored substance. If this helps in any way.

Both the sv and xh soil pipe I used were coated with a black tar like material.Dura-iron was a light gray or silver color .

If it were not coated, the pipe and fittings would be a gray color, but they never were. ALL cast iron pipe and fittings had a black "tar" coating. It helped to seal the joint when the hot lead "melted" it.
