I've just had my bathroom remodeled. The portion of the house is very old -- not sure just how old the plumbing is. That bathroom always had 'dirty' water -- the bathroom in the newer part of the house did not. There is copper piping directly to toilet -- but contractor said some of the piping to that bathroom and the kitchen is galvanized. Brand new toilet -- they had to remove (after it had been used for about 3 weeks) due to an error they made. While toilet is waiting to be re-installed -- I looked into tank. It's dry...and has a sandy texture sediment in the bottom of it. Contractor says it's probably from the galvanized piping. Is there ANY way to clean the pipes (without opening walls back up) -- flushing or anything? And if so -- what kind of professional should I find to do it? A plumber? Thanks so much for any answers!

I doubt its from galvanized piping. I'd say its from your water source. Do you have any type of sediment filter on your main water coming into the house?

i agree... galvanized piping does not create sand. rusty water or rust particles, yes, but not sand..

It is most difficult to tell you, since you did not mention the source of your water. City or personal well??? Sand is not part of galvanized pipe, and what you see could be high minerals. Of course, you could have the material analyzed.

I do - have all sorts of water softener/filter/uv on the water from my well. Wonder if maybe I should get the people that installed and service it all to check my toilet. Interesting though -- that it doesn't happen in the other toilet?! In any case, very much appreciate your response!

LadyLioness, your original question was vague with not enough factual information. Your update revealed that your house water comes from a private well and uses a processing station to condition and soften your water. You didn't mention any filters or additives, by name, model or series.
You might want to contact the company who installed your system with (UV) and have them check to be sure the system is working properly.
