My kitchen sink has water going down the pipe ( I can hear it), but the faucet is not running, and neither is the dishwasher. I pulled out the little white knob under the sink that is the cold water ( I know this because the cold water will not run now) and the running water sound stopped. What do I do now? I guess I don't get it? If that is the hose that brings water into the faucet, how can it be draining down the pipe without coming out of the faucet first?

Do you have a reverse-osmosis water filter?

In Arizona, usually when you hear the sound of running water and do not see any, it means you have a broken hot water line under the floor. Turning off the cold water could just be attenuating the sound so it is not as noticeable.
