 waxless toilet ring question
Author: ishouldofcalledaplumber (OK)

What started out as a $15 toilet repair job turned into a broken toilet tank and a $400+ one piece (one less piece to screw up) new high speed john. I heard about these wax less rings an of course ordered the wrong size (3") at once, #$%@&. The new toilet arrived... new 4" ring won't go down the pipe even with my 225 lbs on it.

My stupid question now is this: will it hurt anything to stick the 3" ring on with a new wax ring also? Seems like putting a funnel down the chute might not be a bad thing! Or will I just end up fishing the ring out of drain later on? Thanks for your help on this.
:)

From what you have posted, I have absolutely NO IDEA what you are asking, so cannot make a recommendation.

Where ever you purchased your new toilet.. should have supplied you with the correct gasket considering your mechanical knowledge and plumbing. Some manufactures of toilets require a woven graphite style vs foam, while most suggests a lifetime wax gasket.
What brand and model of one-piece toilet did you purchase?

Best Wishes

TOTO MS854114S-01 Ultramax Elongated One Piece Toilet, Cotton White. No recommendations from manufacturer, but reviewers used wax rings that never came with their toilets either.

I am going to get a wax ring, since the 4" waxless ring was slightly larger than the drain pipe. Since I have also now am stuck with a useless 3" WAXLESS RING which will stick perfectly over the toilets bottom drain hole and fit nicely down the pipe about 6", I thought it might direct the flushed water more directly into the drain thus the water shouldn't even come in contact with the wax unless it has a back up, then hopefully the wax ring will do its job. Am I crazy for thinking outside the box?

I personally have experience with Fernco waxless and would recommend their use only with new toilets {as the adhesive may not adhere to toilets that had a wax ring previously installed).

The only brand I like is the Fernco but it has to be sized correctly. The sizing is somewhat difficult if you aren't sure of the size of your pipes. The adhesive really sticks and ensures a leak free connection that can be taken apart during repair of the toilet and reused (if you didn't damage the adhesive)

A possible use for the waxless is where you have had repeated failure of wax rings. (possibly due to motion of the stool and or floor}. The waxless is much more forgiving if there is any motion and you have had repeated failure of the wax ring. The wax seal is the weakest part of the entire waste plumbing system IMHO.

I think the other waxless toilet seal brands (Fluidmaster etc) that rely on compression are not nearly as good as Fernco. The other brands rely on compression between the stool and the flange to make the seal and the toilet / flange connection is the weakest connection in the entire waste pipe system IMHO.

id just go to Home Depot and get a normal extra thick wax ring for $2.00

i dont know anything about a 3" wax ring...i think they are all the same size

i dont see any advantage to the waxless one....the wax ones work...id stick with what works

i think your over thinking this one....

Where the toilets flange and!!!the toilet flange allow the three. Where was the original problem with the three inch???The only place not to use a regular wax gasket is on a floating floor or a wall hung toilet.Provided the flange on the floor is correctly sized and installed.
