when turning hot water off in shower stem closes but when released pops straight out turning hot water on. If it does stay closed. when I use hot water in sink shutting water off back pressure makes shower stem pop out which releases hot water. it has gotten to the point where it will not shut off just pops out after trying to tighten

Interesting. Hold old is the faucet? What brand of faucet do you have? When parts are worn or not properly mating, water pressures can do what you mentioned. Advising you to use Factory Repair Parts (OEM) would be my 1st suggestion.

Are you saying it turns itself to the open position? Just clarifying

I assume this is a multi handle faucet, not a single handle one. If so, then the threads on the stem are worn out and you need a new stem and bonnet assembly.

Those AS Aquarian faucet stems (with the hat washers) would do that occasionally. Sometimes just wiping off all the lube would help, sometimes not. If not, I would install the Aquarian stems with the regular washers and be on my way.

HE said "pops out", not "unscrews".

As jerco said.but may be nothing more than a need to tighten the seat stem compression nut.As failures occur this way, as the user has to hard turn.Causing an unseating the stem brass from the valve brass.look forward to new top hats soon as the tightness will only stop the auto opening.American Standard aqua seals .Larger ones for the tub shower.

NO ONE, other than a single responder has even said this is an American Standard Aquaseal faucet, and from the description, it is not.

sorry HJ.you are correct.but is the only wear problem that related to self opening valve,I have experienced.most become hard to open or close or fail for other reasons as new replacement parts are installed. For the poster.simply push in on the knob with out turning to see if the push stops the flow.
