Hundred Seventy Five DOLLARS for a Moen cart???? If its a positemp, he may pay $45..retail maybe $75. Sounds high. It is rare that a moen shower can NOT be repaired.
Hard to say from here why he decided it could not be fixed.

Its most difficult to judge another person's actions.... without being there and seeing what was done, who did it and how old the original plumbing valve is. It would be much easier if your plumbing presented his side to the work that was done, and why. Moen, if asked would have provided you with a new cartridge. Unfortunately, you had the work done before you came here for tangible advice.
Do you have before and after pictures?
Best Wishes

Im a little confused. Did you pay him for the first job that failed? it sounded way too high anyway, but if it failed and he needed to change out the whole valve then he should not take the money for the job that didnt work. I agree with Jimmy, I can't remember the last time I saw a moen that couldnt be serviced.

i would have been in the $175-195 range for the cartridge swap (labor included)
his fee structure is a bit strange....the cartridge is most likely a $25-$35 item (his cost)..dont know where his markup goes to 7x.....but there wasnt a trip charge....his labor charge is also a bit low
ive had Moens that had to be replaced because a new cartridge doesnt solve the problem...but its rare....good chance there is a piece of old rubber inside the barrel causing the leak....
$100 to replace the whole valve is crazy cheap....the new valve is most likely that much with normal markup....so he most likely did the labor part for free
sounds like you paid $365 for the whole thing, which is a good deal in my opinion (if it is true that the Valve itself was bad)....i would have been more
his fee structure is odd....strange you didnt hang up on his when he said the cartridge was $175...i would have

It appears that you had an opportunistic plumber who may not have known how to repair your faucte. THere is NO Moen cartidge that costs $175.00, and I have NEVER had to replace a Moen valve to repair the problem. Something is wrong with your price descriptions, or he damaged the valve and just charged you a modicum for the labor to replace it.

ladylike was this a quoted cost to repair the problem. If so any farther costs are the plumbers!!!If not use another plumber to correct and send his bill to the last one!!!Out of line costly at least failed to cure unknown???moen is a well known valve value .If the plumber had a rotor or ruetor in his name tell him ,a on line plumber will for his cost twelve thousand fit the valve.

Lemon:
1. I would NEVER quote a repair cost ahead of time
2. They could send all the bills they want, as long as they do not expect payment.
3. If you are going to charge $12,000.00 to replace the valve, then you are a worse plumber than the original one.
