 Code for shower slope?
Author: John Smith (TX)

Please can anyone help me.
I have a builder who has built a marble tile shower for me that has a slope of 1 inch per foot.I think it is too steep.I would like it redone to as flat a slope as code would allow. What is the code in Texas for slopes on the shower floors?Or where can I go to look it up?

Thank you,
John Smith

Different areas of the country adopt different codes. Contact your local building department to find out what code is in effect. However the 2009 IRC International residential code section P2709 shower receptors[ meaning pans ] Shower receptors shall have a finished threshold curb not less than 1 inch below the sides and back of the receptor The curb shall be not less than 2 inches or more than 9 i nches deep when measured from the top of the curb to the top of the drain. The finished floor shall slope uniformily towards the drain not less than 1/4 inch per foot [2%] nor more than 1/2 [13 mm] and the floor drains shall be flangedto provide a water tite joint to tyhe floor.Hope this helps

there really isnt a set code for the slope of showers as long as the water runs to the drain but 1/4"-1/2" per foot is what most try to go by

Not being there...I get a sense that it would be uncomfortable showering in the stall with that much slope. Having said that, it might be negotiating time....how much would he concede to you if you can live with it?

It MAY be not-to-code, which gives you more ammunition and him less leeway. The local code authority can tell you what the code actually says. Has this job passed final yet??

1" per foot is the required slope for a handicap ramp, but I would consider it unsafe in a shower, even with "non skid" tiles.

Did anyone read my post regarding IRC code before posting their thoughts?

The IRC would probably change their code to 1" per foot if the installer asked them to.

questions about code requirments are specific to your city. contact the building inspector division and they will be more than happy to provide you the info, since the inspector is the one enforcing the code
