Hello, I'm a DIY'er who just purchased a 10 yr old home and fixing it up. One problem I cannot fix is the tub/ shower gets no water or just a trickle when single handle fixture is turned on. I have replaced cartridge/ diverter (moen) with no luck, same thing happens. When I take out cartridge and open valve, I get water shooting out so I know I have water at that point. But when I put cartridge back in, same thing...trickle or nothing. Any suggestions on what else I can troubleshoot here will be extremely appreciated. Thanks.
Also, when I shake both old and new cartidges I can hear the diverter moving. I only have cold water as of now b/c hot water tank is being replaced. I have water at all other showers and sinks.

That valve is pressure balanced. It requires both hot and cold supplies to work properly.
Wait until the hot water is restored, then test.
Best Wishes

Water heater is out, so the hot water pressure is ZERO. The balancing spool in the valve is working so it equalizes the cold pressure to ZERO. Ergo, no hot or cold pressure, therefore no water flow.

Was thinking that...but lost because all sinks (cold) work and downstairs shower has cold pressure. I am also reno'ing the master bath shower and those lines aren't pressurized either. So both spare and master showers are inoperable b/c of this? Thanks for the reply.

The shower valve istself is the component that will not pass ANY water if one side is zero pressure.

I just had a similar problem recently where the tub spout flow was full pressure with the cartridges out and put the cartridge in and no flow to the shower. All other faucets worked fine with equal hot/cold. No matter what I did I could not get water to flow from the shower head with any hot water pressure. I used a compressor and tried numerous things to get this shower to flow with the cartridges in. I finally asked the neighbor if i could use his water spigot and hose as it was close to this shower. I connected a fitting to the shower hose to attach a hose. When I turned on the neighbors hose and ran it, it was just enough pressure needed to blast some goop out of the pipes which was blocking water flow to the shower head. Not saying it is your problem but something to check.
