I want to monitor the amount of gas used by the fixtures on the back half of my gas service. I'm thinking that cutting in a second gas meter would be straight forward, although I've never done it. I'm a plumber by trade, so I do understand the code requirements as far as the installation goes. Any sugestions as to the installtion, the amount I need to pay for a second meter, the make, etc., etc. Thanks
Ron S.

You do know that you have to isolate the fixtures with a dedicated line and probably resize the gas line also, don't you?

Contact your local gas authority and they will answer all your questions. They are the ones that you have to keep happy .I'm sure the answers will vary from person to person here.JMO

Once it leaves the utility's meter, they don't care what you do with it, in most cases, unless they have a prohibition about "reselling" the gas. The pipe sizes will already be correct, so the meter will not change that either. You will not have a large selection of meters so just get one for the size of pipe you are connecting it to.

Google will find you a meter. The public utility commission rules almost surely do not allow you to submeter the gas on your own, in terms of billing a third party, if that is what you have in mind.

But he could submeter the gas, assign a dollar value to it, and using that value, build a rental fee which would include the utilities...

He could do that by just arbitrarily assigning a value to the gas, and include that in the rent, just like every other landlord does when there are not individual meters.

Where I live the city does care about the gas after it leaves the meter .Only licensed gas fitters fitters can install appliances and do gas piping. We have a gas inspector ,also a plumbing inspector. It is against the city code to do it yourself when it comes to gas or plumbing.

Adding a second meter, and INSTALLING a second meter are two different things. Normally they do not care IF you install the meter, as long as the INSTALLATION is done legally/properly.
