toilet handle hard to push down on suddenly
Author: Lipwak (NY)

Hi,

You have come to my rescue many times in the past so I thank you in advance.

My current problem is that my toilet handle is hard to push down suddenly, in the past week or so. I haven't touched anything inside there for years so I didn't cause this problem.

I looked inside and see the lever where it connects to the whatever that lifts the thing that makes the water flow. (Real technical, I know.) Here is a pic.

I have tried moving where the lever connects to that main post. I thought turning the post so that the lever connects a tad more to the left seemed to help but the next time I tried it it was hard to push down there too.

I have tried to twist the post (the brown column) to see if it needs to be screwed in but how could it have gotten to this point if the lever was still attached.

I am at a loss as to why the handle is so hard to push only recently and how to fix it.

I appreciate any and all help.

Cheers,

John L

Sometimes it it is caused by needing a new seal at the bottom of the flush valve. If you pull the refill tube out and unscrew the round stop on top of the flush valve you will find the gasket is at the point of the stationary part where the two parts meet, You will need to buy a replacement seal, and peal out the old and install the new.

That is a mansfield toilet. Remove the fill tube out of the white disk. That disk unscrews to allow you to remove the flush mechanism. That is where the seal is. Use Shoemaker's link to see what it is. You need to repace that seal. It is sticking to the bottom of the flush valve causing it to be hard to push your handle down.

The plumber came today. (Wow, that was fast!) He replaced the lever. It seems to work but I am skeptical. I was going to mention what you all had said here but he's the kind of guy that would not take kindly to other people telling him how to do things so I didn't.

I'll report back if things go back to being a problem again (and get my landlady to really fix it...)

Thanks again.

Cheers,

John L

The lever was tight because the tower was sticking to the flush valve seat. I have seen many Mansfield levers break because of it, but the handle was not the original problem. As long as you have a guarantee that what he did fixed the problem, you may be okay.

I agree but that's the way he wanted to fix it. Since I'm not paying for it I can't argue with the guy. I just hope it helps for awhile.

Cheers,

John

He must have been the building's handyman, paid to do as little as possible. A GOOD plumber would have changed the flush valve seal, REGARDLESS, of any other problem. Yours probably solved the symptom and kept the disease.
