 Hot water flow?

Well ran dry.Or pump lost prime due to hole in intake pipe. Haven't checked that yet. will deal with that later. Well has extremely hard water. Turned on cistern (soft water)pump. lots of cold flow on line into hot water heater. little to no flow out of hot water tank. turn cold tap on upstairs, then hot. Get lots of cold flow out of hot line for a short time after turning cold off. Slowly drops off to nothing. Comes back when cold is turned on. After waiting for a bit, a small amount of hot water will come under pressure, then drop off and quit. Heater beat? line out plugged?

There must be a restriction somewhere. Could be anywhere. Is every faucet doing the same thing? Make sure the valve to the water heater is full port as well.

if it happens with all your faucets then there is a restriction in the line coming out of the heater but before it branches to any fixtures. if it is in just certain fixtures then it is a restriction in the branch line to that particular fixture somewhere

What is the likelihood that the 10 year old heater is so clogged with mineral deposit that it's euchred? There is no pressure at the tank drain. just a couple of quarts of lukewarm water then no flow. No flow out the pressure relief valve either.

You could remove the exit pipe and have a look.

You seem from the last post to have a inlet problem.make sure the cold valve is actually open. Many think two turns of agate and you are done ten would be more like it.

Good Luck. Insulate your hot piping, although costly, it will pay you back every day.

was filling a bathtub when well crapped out. haven't moved the gate except to remove and check flow after problem started. Had flow before the pump went, now nothing. line coming in has 60 psi on cold. shot across the cellar when I removed the valve and tested flow. Still nothing at the bottom of the tank. I'll snake the intake, see if it's plugged. Thanks so far.

Either the cistern pump is worn out, or something is plugging the supply pipe to the heater.

found what was left of a rodent just past the inlet valve. not sure how it got there, but bones and fur were stuck in the bottom of the valve case. obviously it was above and when the valve was removed and flow turned on it dropped. We have an external water source which is blown out every fall and the outlet must have been left open long enough for buddy to get in and die. thank you all.

I hope that water was isolated from the cold water supply, and if not, that you were not drinking the water.

If I were you I would sanitize the well and the plumbing supplies to make sure nothing bad comes from your uninvited guest.
