I purchased a complete repair kit for an American Standard toilet. When I removed the tank I discovered the bolts were not standard 5/16th inch but 1/4 inch. One hole is large enough to insert a 5/16th bolt with ease. The other hole is very slightly too small for the 5/16th bolt to insert into it. Suspect a manufacturers original intent was to use 5/16th but due to a defect switched to a 1/4 bolt. I inspected the hole for burs but dont see any. I decided to go back in with new 1/4 inch bolts but have searched several of the usual home supply stores plus my local hardware. None of them stock the 1/4 inch tank to bowl bolt. Any suggestions as to where I can locate 1/4 inch brass tank to bowl repair kits will be greatly appreciated.

What happened to the original bolts you took out? You will need a bolt with a "mushroom head", which may be hard to find in brass, since they are usually used with toggle bolts.

Any American Stadard-Master Stocking Distributor can obtain those tank bolts for you. Check their website for the closet Stocking Distributor or your local telephone yellow pages.

The original bolts are too corroded to reuse. Will be going to a plumbing supply house later this week. Thanks.

Drill out the hole with a rasp or a masonry bit. Use water and don't put the setting on vibrate if you are using a roto-hammer. Do it on a solid surface and maybe pack a wet towel or some insulator underneath the tank. I drill through ceramic, granite and glass all the time. Piece of cake.

Thanks for reply. I was able to enlarge the hole by using a dremel bit.
